~LAMAR HOUSE INVITING JOINT TOURS AND MEETINGS~
The L.Q.C. Lamar House is a special place. It’s special because its meticulous restoration has revealed a modest yet handsome Greek Revival structure worthy of preservation. It’s special because it was home to Lucius Lamar while he reflected on defeat and resolved to work for reconciliation between North and South. As Oxford rose from the ashes, Lamar prepared to become a statesman. Later it was Senator Lamar’s retreat from the demands of Washington.
By the fall of 2010, exhibits that tell the Civil War era story of Lamar will fill the house. Until then, clubs, professional associations and social groups are invited to experience this special place as a meeting site. A private guided tour of the historic site is offered in conjunction with either regular or special meetings.
Lamar House docents will tell groups why the house is honored as a National Historic Landmark, how the house was saved, how the Lamar family lived in the house, and what distinguished the career of L.Q.C. Lamar. Tours take about 30 minutes, depending on questions.
Afterwards, groups can hold a meeting in the Lamar House for up to two hours, including simple refreshments that can be set up in the catering kitchen. If a casual meal is desired along with the meeting, boxed lunches can be arranged at an additional cost.
The combined tour and meeting space is offered at the cost of just the regular $5.00 house admission per group member. Scheduling is flexible and efforts will be made to accommodate preferred times. However, this unique opportunity is available only until museum exhibits are installed. Call Mary Allyn Roulhac at the City Hall tourism desk 232-2477 for details and to reserve your club’s private time at the Lamar House.
Adding a gathering in this beautifully restored historic house to club calendars will contribute to making it a part of community life. The Lamar House is located at 616 N. 14th St. parallel to and one block east of N. Lamar, with handicapped parking in the rear and general parking off N. 16th St.
